Best parts of thankgiving
1. We got our packages today!!Packages from America from the andersons!!! Yes!!

2.AManda said she believed americans gave gifts on thanksgiving. SHe comes to me during our party and got all embarassed because she said, after I told her we dont usually give gifts that she gave her mother and father underwear cause she thought we gave gifts!!! Ha ha

Happy Thanksgiving!

We had no Turkey, No turkey trot run, no pumpkin pie, but we did have, a flame light, deviled eggs and 2 chickens.
We did have all of our chinese teachers from our office and the senior 3 office, Mary Clare a fellow american teacher from Yueyang city, Chris, The guy from Cameroon that teaches in our town too, and many children = our chinese family.

I love get togethers, espiecially ones in China. We didn't even have a dining room table!,but everyone helped themselves and took part in our Thanksgiving.
All week we have been running around to find ingredients and cut up all the vegetables, I am still in shock that we got it all done.
Here is the menu:
2 chickens ( bought from a hotel and prepared for us)
1 can creamed corn mixed with 1 can regular corn
deviled eggs , minus the paprika
Beenie Wienees or something similar, hey theyve got b-bcue sauce
Spagehtti
Sweet N Sour Pork, american style with pineapple and a sweet sauce
Rice
Mashed Potatos

The Sweet N SOur pork went over really well but as the chinese love to comment on cooking they asked, "why is there no peppers in it, I think you should make it spicy next time and it would be very delicious."
The Mashed potatos also were in question, They thought they needed to be cooked longer. This comment actually puzzled us, cause how much longer can you cook mashed potatos? There mashed??
Deviled eggs were a hit, When asked why there called "deviled eggs " I replied , "because they're so good the devil had to have made them" He looked at me strangly then just started laughing, like I'm the crazy one with crazy beliefs.

The best part about the evening was that tonight was like Chritmas. Whoever told our friends that american people give gifts on thanksgiving, Im thankful for that guy. We received a beautiful flame lamp from the senior 3 teachers., and two huge bags of snacks from our senior 2 teachers. I also got a chinese fashion magazine from our chinese tutor.
The snacks were the funniest thought. SOme are bags of potato chips. They say on the bag translated, "Potato flavor potato chips" We also received Chocolate eggs rolls, and Swirlly SPicy Tofu. But the winner of the weird award defiently goes to some kind of snack that on the bottom tells us it is made at the shanghai cat food company!!!!!!
CHeck out the photos!

Happy ThanksGIving Everyone, Whereever you may be.

Fajitas and so much more!!

We made fajitas!! Thats right from scratch. Just call me mama emelita!! We found the receipe for tortillas online : Lard, Wheat Flour, Salt and Water
After finally finding wheat flour instead of rice flour and explaining to many chinese that we did not want to make our own lard from scratch, we were able to make these amazing creations!
For more look at the pictures on our photo website, link on the left.
We used a beer bottle as a rolling pin and a wok for a pan. Check it out! They tasted amazing!

Quotes of the week

Last night Bear, the phone guy from downstairs asked us to come down and play cards with him and his wife. We played for a couple hours, then when the students got out of classes we stopped and returned when buisness was slow again. After closing up for the night Bear asked us to go to get night snacks. We went to the same barbacue restraunt where we had met the chairman of Rong Jia Wan weeks earlier.
We had goat or sheep on a stick, fish, and some Jiu cai, which translates as chinese chives, but they dont taste like chives at all, in fact they're joes favorite food now.

Here are some quotes from our conversation at the table.
Reminder: Ova= over.

Bear speaking about gam bei: "means drink ova"
Bear speaking about finshing the meal: "eat ova"
Bear speaking about other uses for the word over: "Hongkong policeman said on film , Ova **Cush Cush***Ova"

and who can forget the hilariousness of the Groshens trying to explain pop culture to our friend Erin, earlier this week.

Emily" Do you know Destiny's Child?" ( speaking to Erin)
Joe " Yeah Isn't there somebody named Scar or Three Eyes in that group?"
Emily " No, That's TLC and its Left eye!"
(Erin just looks puzzled)

Confucious was a cool cat!

Last night our friend Erin was home from university. She came over with some questions for us on English Idioums. She brought with her a huge stack of papers that she had to memorize. Can you believe they make them memorize this stuff?? She also had a book of confucious since many chinese idioums are based upon his teachings. She told us some of the idioums she had were translations from chinese and she wanted us to guess which ones were english.
Here are a few , see if you can tell! I think its preety easy to find the chinese ones! Tell me what you think.

Down in the mouth, lose one's spirit, with tail between legs.
You can't make a crab walk straight
Care kills a cat
win win co-operation ( we told her it probubly should be situation)
Even a dragon finds it hard to control a snake in its old haunt
Powerful outsiders can hardly afford to neglect local bullies.
talk of the devil and he comes ( maybe speak of the devil?)
speak the truth, call a spade a spade ( this one I had to include for Grandma Charboneau!)
Skin a flea for it's Hide
a slow sparrow should make an early start ( Maybe the early bird gets the worm?)
and my favorite,.
Life begins at forty! ( Erin asked me, do you know who says this? I said , "umm old men" and she said no "Confucious first said this". "Wow Confucious was a cool cat " I said
She then asked me what cool cat means and informed me that in china the saying is cool dog. So if you are ever needing to use 50's slang in china make sure you get it right. Cool Dog!

You are currently reading the blog of the voices for the city wide listening competition. Thats right if you were a chinese elementry or middle school student , living anywhere near our city you would be hearing our voices today and writing down what you heard.
We spent about 2 hours recording our voices saying things like tea, meal, this, that.
My voice is actually kinda horse from it. We had to read a few paragraphs and dialogues too.
They said they liked our voices better then the ones pre recorded on the tape. I guess they had chinese voices speaking english, so they wanted real english people speaking.

later that night we introduced Gin and tonics to our friends downstairs. We found tonic water in the clearance rack at walmart. Leading us to believe that everything past its experation date in the U.S. must be then sent to China for sale. The tonic water however tasted just the same and we bought some Gordon's Gin from the walmart liquor section. The Barber thought it tasted pretty awful and the telephone guy ( bear) thought it was great. Good enough to Gam bei his whole class. We even shared it with our new english teacher friend Linda, who helped us with the recording. She lives with her parents and also has a dorm room here in our building. Although there's another teacher that lives next door from us that also has a room here and he shares it with his mother, baby niece and nephew. ( its incriedable to see how people can live!) The dorm room consists of a small long room and another back room that holds a shower/toliet and counter. I asked her how our friend and his mother cook and live in such a small area. and she says that they use a small electric burner and use the shower as a cleaning sink too. I was pretty shocked. I now know why I see our friend in the office almost anytime during the day. If you shared a small train car sized room with your mother, infant niece and 5 year ols nephew. You would want to escape to the office whenever you could. What is crazy is that his niece and nephew live here because they're mother and father believe that this is a better place to grow up then in the city with them. I guess we are very secure and there are many children that live in our building, but I guess I never figured that I would exchange childhood friends for a larger sleeping space. All I know is that Our friend, His english name is Antoinne, Is a saint in our book! All in all Gin and tonics were a hit. Its so funny to watch when they try something american. Espiecially mashed potatos and spaghetti.

We have been seeing some pretty funny things in the last couple of days. Students are catching colds and other illness' , so they often will go to the hospitol to get some medicine. Last night when Joe was coming home from the store he saw three girls. One carrying to bottles above her head. When he got closer he noticed that they wern't bottles but IVs !! When he questioned the girls they said, that they couldnt miss school so they just brought them back with them and when school is over they will go back to the hospitol to have the needles removed! Crazy!!

We also have been playing a funny joke on our students. This week we are talking about cultural relics. We talk about the pyramids, and the great wall, then we talk about Stone Henge and how no one knows who built it. After about 4 mins of that we look for the most asleep student in the class and ask them to stand up, then we ask them who built stonehenge? They always look around like uhhhh, then they say their favorite english answer which is "I'm sorry, I don't know" Then we start clapping and the whole class roars with laughter! The kid is always standing there not knowing whats going on. I always say "this will be the only question where the answer is I dont know!"

For this lesson we are asking the kids to put 5 things into a time capsale and send it into space, some of the students are very creative I had them draw the items
here are some of the items:

Gun, so when E.T. opens the box you can go bang!
Teacher Emily, Teacher Joe
Chopsticks
Chinese Kung Fu,
The japanese ( I had to remind the student that a country cannot fit in a box, so he said only one man, or maybe a dog, because a dog would represent them well!!) Wow is what I thought too!
a pile of poop. ( a student drew this in one of my classes and she couldn't tell me what it was in english, then one of my class pets looked it up in the dictionary, and screamed, feces teacher emily its feces!!! The crazy thing is, in the next class another student drew the same picture of poop, hmm there must be some kind of weird cartoon with poop here that I havent heard about.
kfc
a map, so aliens can come to earth

It's pretty funny when some of these kids actually think outside of the box.

P.s We are making a documentry on the Asain Sanchez, For those of you who do not know, There is a teacher in our school who looks and acts exactly like our bestest of friend back in the states Tom Sanchez. We will be making a blooper reel of his hilarious bafoonery!! He played vollyball today , enough said!

Jerry's

If you all remember Jerry, we were invited to his home for dinner last friday. His Grandma took us in right away and hugged us. She then made us call her mama the rest of the night. Seemed more like an italian grandma then a chinese one. We were greeted with many hugs and were shown around the apartment. I was then taken into a bedroom where his grandma started explaining to me that her daughter was dead! Jerry had always told us that his mother had lived in Yueyang as a tailor, so this was very odd. I looked at him to confirm in english that this is what his grandmother was telling me and he said yes that she was dead. I feel so bad for him. Many of the chinese teachers have told me that he likes to be alone and that he doesnt talk much in class. Then with all that happened in my class and the students making fun of him for talking to me. I felt so bad for him. His sister , father and grandparents all live in this apartment and jerry is boarded at the school. We were served duck, dog, chicken, fish and many vegetables. An expensive meal for a family with only one income. Then we also had a strange egg mixture that left me feeling sick for many days after. One of the nicest families I have ever met. The grandma even walked with us to the bus, the whole way there she held my hand and rubbed my arms telling me over and over that I needed to be wearing a coat!

We just found out that our telephone man downstairs, his name is bear,is also a post man. Just to keep you updated on our soap opera we have the telephone man and the haircut guy, dont get them confused. Haircut guy cant speak english and we arent sure if he can speak mandarin, but telephone guy can speak english and Joe is helping him to practice almost everyday. If I have learned one thing from this its that I have a very kind and patient husband, Its amazing how much he does for everyone here.
Back to the telephone guy, he is a postman, so I had him help me mail my penpal letters to America. Some people will try to take you for a ride at the post office so its nice to have a friend who knows there way around and can get us a good deal. Everything really is about who you know here in China. He called his friend who came over to my house directly, weighed and measured the packages and gave me a deal. Although it was really expensive still! But I knew at least that it was a fair deal. and who can beat the mail man coming to your house, no lines, no mean workers!! Pretty awesome. America in just 7 days you will have my packages, we await your replies!

Wow China has taken over our lives by storm. Here are the updates you've all been waiting for....

Small Creatures: We were lucky enough to find this guy right outside our school selling little animals to the students as they come and go. He is selling parakeats, bunnys, small guinea pigs, mice, and in the left corner if you take a closer look, yep thats a chipmunk!!!!! Wow. The whole time it was bitting on a rope trying desperatly to free it self, only in China can you buy a chipmunk for less then 10 cents.
Speaking of small furry creatures we also are secret keepers for a few of our students. One day Joe and I were just hanging out near one of the classrooms. We could see that several of the students were playing with something and passing it back and forth. So we decided to see what it was. When I asked they first kept it hidden, but I let them know that I wouldn't tell on anyone and that I just wanted to see what it was. The girl then opened her hand and revealed a tiny mouse! She told me that she keeps it in a small cage, just like these cages pictured. She keeps it in her desk and feeds it grass, chips and tea. I asked her if the mouse made noise, but she said the noise is too soft for the teachers to hear it. Later that week I also had this happen with another group of students in a different classroom. I guess its a trend in our high school to hide small creatures in your desk.

Massage: Recently Joe and I went to get massages at our local massage place. Our friend from Cameroon assured us that this was a good place, so we ventured inside. This was no ordinary massage however. Chinese massages arenot like the ones you all know well in America. No smelly oils, no mood music. Just a guy or girl, lights on and a bed. Yeah not a massage bed. An actual bed! At first I was a little worried and uncomfertable, but then I thought. Hey I'm in China, so lets just see what happens. I was in my own room and Joe in his own room. I had a guy and Joe had a girl. You lay down on the bed and they come in. Then they sit down on the bed and take off their shoes. This is when it got really weird. For me, the guy started massaging my legs, but the whole time he was starring at me. and standing over me with no shoes on! He then massaged my legs all the way to my waist and then left his hands directly on my inner thigh! Later I remembered from my days in nursing school that there is a large artery there and in chinese medicine he was stopping the blood flow to my legs. At the time however I thought I was going to die!
I started cracking up a few times because this was very different from any massage I have ever gotten in the U.S. or even in CHina!. Then we talked as much chinese as I know , saying where I worked, what I like to do, that I am american. etc. and then thats when the time came that every person trying to learn a new language knows, there was silence. I had run out of chinese, and he didnt know English. So that left me feeling even more not relaxed then before. However I did learn the chinese word for relax because the kind and handsome, I might add, man continued to tell me it again and again. When I finally relaxed I relized why they have a bed for these types of things. He wrapped my leg in a funny position as if I were stretching after running and began massaging it with his feet. Possibly the best massage of my life and since I had just run that day, it felt amazing. He also massaged my arms, face and head, and then my stomach. The stomach was very strange, almost like going to the doctor. After he was finished he sat next to me and we compared tattoos. We then got up, he offered me a tissue, which I didnt know what the hell to do with, then my glass of tea. As Joe and I paid he continued to stare at me and tell me he would love it if I came back to see him. It was an amazing massage, yet I cant help feeling like I cheated on my husbandIt was sooooo weird! !! Joe also had a similar expeirence which also included about 3 chinese women trying to learn english. All in all we both agree the leg thing with the feet is the best!!

Joe's new chinese name: Joe has recently changed his chinese name. it is now Zhouen lei.
There have been countless occations in which I will be telling someone that Joe and I are going to the supermarket. Thats when they look at me and say pardon? I tell them again and then I have to re word it so I say me and joe. Then they understand. I asked my chinese teacher what she thought I said finally and she told me that she thought I was speaking chinese and refering to one of the famous communist party leaders that served with Mao, whose name is Zhou en lei. Pronounced Joe and I . I would like to introduce you to Joe Groshens aka Zhou en lei!

B.Boss night club: We have a bar in our town called B. Boss. Since we arrived we always thought about going, but since Joe and are arent really the dance club types, we always found other things to do. Last week however we had a friend come and stay with us not to mention our friend from cameroon really wanted to go. So we ventured out to the club. When we got there they told us there would be a show and that we should wait about 15 mins. We ordered some wine and when it was brought out the waitress poured it into a pitcher full of ice. It was red wine!! So strange, ( a friend told us they ordered french red wine at a fancy restraunt and it came out in a glass with sprite)
The show started about an hour later(china time, much like island time) It started with 4 girls and two boys all dressed in Mambo type outfits. The girls wore these crazy flamanco inspired orange gowns with a long skirt in the back and short in the front, frilly all around. The men wore blue shirts that were open in the front, just like the mambo men you see on dancing with the stars. and white pants and a cumber bun to match. Pretty Hot right?
They did there number and introduced the hosts for the evening. The male host had his head shaved in weird patches, almost like he had fallen off a motorecycle and some hair was long (to his back) and the rest was gone. all of this was on a stage the size of my living room and the bar wasnt much bigger. The evening then led into jokes and more singing numbers and more outfit changes then you can count on one finger. The show ended with 5 chinese girls and there mother doing contortionists acts. They spun plates on sticks and climbed through a ladder there mother was holding with her feet. Very impressive, but after watching it for 10 mins I relized what time it was and that these girls were not going to school in the morning and therefore didnot need to be in bed already. Its sad that this is the way people make money and when they are too old who knows what happens to them.
It was a good show and our guest loved it.I guess its good to live in a small town, where you can go to a bar and everybody knows your name. We have our own little frenchmens in China! except I never saw any mambo dancers in hot blue shirts at frenchmens, what gives, somebody needs to call chris and have him tell the management!
